Future Generations Commissioner Sophie Howe has made a major push in the battle to save the lagoon, with an announcement on whether the UK Government will back the £1.3bn renewable energy project expected in the coming weeks.

The Commissioner argues the lagoon, which would feature a six-mile long structure, “could act as a barrier to damaging waves that threaten coastal communities and infrastructure vulnerable to flooding and coastal erosion”.

Champions of the lagoon hope it will position Wales as a world leader in the marine energy market.

Supporters of the lagoon have been waiting since January 2017 for the UK Government to respond to the independent review led by former Energy Minister Charles Hendry which backed the lagoon as a “no regrets” policy.

The Commissioner said that if the UK Government had the same duty to consider future generations as public bodies in Wales then we might not still be in the dark about the project’s future.
