What is the Indicator?

Gross Value Added (GVA) per hour worked apportions GVA to the total hours worked by the workforce. Figures are presented relative to the UK GVA per hour worked average.

What does the data say?

GVA per hour worked in Wales is currently the lowest amongst the 12 UK countries and regions, mainly reflecting a comparatively low level of productivity.

Wales faces a particular challenge in performing strongly on productivity, as research shows that, when other things are equal, productivity tends to be higher in and near big cities. Wales has a relatively small share of its population living in or near to big cities.
